The San Diego Turtle and Tortoise Society is a federally registered
non-profit California Corporation comprised of individuals sharing a common
interest in chelonians and is dedicated to the preservation of existing wild
populations along with a better understanding and knowledge of care for
those animals already in captivity.
Its purpose is to acquaint the general public with the proper care of
turtles and tortoises. Detailed care sheets and medical sheets on various
species of turtles and tortoises are written by members of the society and
distributed throughout the United States and other countries. The lives of
many thousands of turtles and tortoises have been improved due to these
informative sheets.
The society began in 1971 with a small group of people interested in
turtles and tortoises and has since grown to a membership of hundreds in the
United States and many foreign countries. Monthly meetings take place on the
second Friday of each month at 7:30 PM in Room 101 of the Casa del Prado
building at Balboa Park in San Diego, California. A formal educational
presentation is followed by refreshments and an informal exchange of ideas
and information.
The society has many committees and educational programs available, and
many of our local members are recognized authorities in their fields of
turtle and tortoise care. A monthly newsletter containing up-to-date
practical information regarding turtles and tortoises in the wild and in
captivity is mailed to the membership.
The greatest emphasis of the society is on the continuation and
preservation of declining wild populations, and many of our activities are
directed toward organized conservation and education programs.
The society participates in and/or sponsors various turtle and tortoise
educational exhibitions each year within the Southern California area. The
purpose is to acquaint the general public with the many services and
valuable information available through the society. Some of our most
important activities include rescuing lost/injured turtles and tortoises,
taking in those whose owners can no longer care for them, and adopting out
turtles and tortoises to good homes.
You are welcome to contact the society for more information.
