Interested in adopting a turtle or tortoise?
ADOPTION IS A MAJOR FUNCTION OF SDTTS
"Re-homing" turtles and tortoises is one of the Society's primary functions.
The animals that are turned in to the Society are evaluated, placed in
foster care, and then adopted out to homes approved by our Adoptions
Committee.
ADOPTING TO MEMBERS ONLY
The Society never charges for adoptions. But to assure
continuity and quality of care for our turtle and tortoise adoptions, we
require that anyone adopting an animal be a current member of the Society.
Follow these FOUR steps...
TO ADOPT A TURTLE OR TORTOISE:
STEP
1. MEMBERSHIP: Become a member. Memberships start at $25.
You can do it
online right now, click here.
STEP
2. CARE SHEETS: Download and study the care sheets found on
pages listed below to determine the species that best fits
your home and lifestyle.
STEP
3. YARD PREP: Get your yard or pond ready as directed in the care
sheet. If you need more assistance with your setup
then email
questions to adoptions@sdturtle.org And if
possible, come to
our monthly meetings
and meet with our Care Coordinators.
STEP
4. SEND PHOTOS: Send your completed Adoptions Form with
photos of your yard or pond when you are ready for an onsite
inspection. Please note,
the Adoption Form is
the last step!

CARE SHEETS FOR MOST COMMONLY AVAILABLE ADOPTIONS
Other species are occasionally available, so no matter what your
interest, please feel free to contact the Adoptions Committee by email at
adoptions@sdturtle.org.
BUT FIRST THINGS FIRST
You really do need to carefully read through the turtle and tortoise care
sheets and evaluate the kind of home you can provide. We will not adopt
out to homes that do not clearly appreciate and understand all the requirements of
the animal they are adopting.
Currently available for adoption ...
This is a "live" list of tortoises and box turtles currently in the care of SDTTS volunteers and ready for adoption. It is updated in real-time by SDTTS Care Coordinators. For more information on the adoption process, go to Adoptions.
