Interested in adopting a turtle or tortoise?

Waiting for adoption

Adoption, or re-homing, is a major function of the Society
The animals that are turned in to the Society are evaluated, placed in foster care, and then adopted out to homes approved by our Adoptions Committee.

IMPORTANT:  The Society never charges for adoptions.  But to assure continuity and quality of care for our turtle and tortoise adoptions, we require that anyone adopting an animal be a member of the Society.

To adopt a turtle and tortoise, follow these important steps
1. MEMBERSHIP: become a member
2. CARE SHEETS: review these to find the species that best fits your home and lifestyle
3. YARD PREP: get your yard or pond ready as directed in the care sheet
4. PHOTOS: send your completed Adoptions form with your yard or pond photos when you are ready for an onsite inspection - please note, Adoption Form is last!           adoptions@sdturtle.org

Care Sheets for most Frequently Available Turtles and Tortoises:

Other species are occasionally available, but no matter what your interest, please feel free to contact the Adoptions Committee by email at adoptions@sdturtle.org.  BUT BEFORE making contact, FIRST you need to carefully read the turtle and tortoise pages listed in the right column and read through the care sheets to get a better understanding of what is required for each species.  We will not adopt out to homes that do not clearly appreciate and understand all the requirements of the animal they are adopting.
