Their  natural habitat is typically found in cool, dry, barren environments such as deserts, hillsides, and steppes, often at elevations of 5,000 feet or higher.  They tend to locate themselves in sand and clay near sources of water and vegetation.
Colors can range from brown to yellow, usually with dark brown on or around each scute.  Shell Length can reach 6 to 8 inches.  Front legs have four claws on each, and the tail has a horny claw.
Russians are active, friendly and outgoing.  With gentle handling they will become tame.  They are adept at climbing and digging and will often seek out hiding places.  In nature they will dig burrows to live, sometimes making them hard to find in the yard.
Being herbivores, 90% of their diet will be natural grasses and weeds.  They will supplement their diet with flowers, cactus, and dark green vegetables.  Life Expectancy can be 50 years or more.
