Sulcatas - the African Spurred Tortoise...

Intro to Sulcata Care

Sold in the pet trade when they are the size of a silver dollar, they will reach up to 150
to 200 pounds.  They will also live to be 100-150 years old.  These tortoises are unusually strong and will need extremely secure fencing and a large living area commensurate with their size.

Sulcata tortoises are native to some of the hottest and driest areas in the northern parts of Africa.  Sulcatas have broad, flattened carapaces reaching 24 to 36 inches in diameter, evenly brownish or yellowish in color. Well-defined spurs, which serve no observable function, are present on the back of the rear legs. Their skin is very thick which may serve to reduce fluid loss through transpiration.

Being herbivores, their diet will consist of 90% grasses and weeds, with occasional cactus and herbaceous plants.  Feedings can be supplemented with hay, Bermuda grass, flowers and some dark green vegetables.

It is mandatory that these adult tortoises have access to a heated outdoor house where the temperature must be kept above 70 degrees.  The Sulcata does not hibernate and cannot be allowed to get chilled or wet in damp weather.
