Well known and respected individuals working on conservation of the desert
tortoise will be presenting at this event. Dr. Kristin Berry famous for her
expertise and research on the desert tortoise will be our featured speaker.
Permits will be issued for your captive desert tortoise on site (please
don’t bring any tortoises.) A hearty lunch will be served by the Elks Lodge.
Various turtle and tortoise items will be sold as well as plants & seeds.
Chapters of the California Turtle and Tortoise Club will attend to help
answer tortoise adoption questions and provide information.

11:00 A.M. Dr. Ken Nagy – Professor Emeritus at U.C.L.A. Ecology &
Evolution Field Herpetologist, Research & Conservation Biology. Dr. Nagy
will be speaking on his work for Conservation Biology and the Head-Start
studies at several specially-built hatchery-nursery installations located in
natural habitat on military bases in the Mojave Desert on raising desert
tortoises & releasing them into the wild. The study includes the many
aspects of the life of a tortoise hatchling.

12:30 P.M Kristin H. Berry PhD U.S.G.S, BRD, Western Ecological Research
Center . "Desert Tortoise Behaviors: Adaptations to Thrive and Survive"
Desert tortoises exhibit a wide variety of behaviors, ranging from defense
of shelters and mate choice to selection to food plants. Topics to be
presented at the workshop will include seasonal activities, home range and
movements, drinking and choice of food plants, social structure and
dominance hierarchies, aggression and combat, defense of nests, mate
guarding, mating and mating systems.
2:00 PM. “Galapagos Encounter” (OPTIONAL $25.00 FEE) 25 people will be
able to “Get up close & personal” with our 3 local Galapagos (10 miles
away). Take photos with Jaws (900 lbs)! This will be a one in a lifetime
opportunity. This is one of our members tortoises.
